Dane Ghyll Community Primary School and Nursery

English

At Dane Ghyll we want every child to develop a love of reading and want our children to be fluent, confident readers by the time they leave us. Through the curriculum they are exposed to a wide range of texts including stories, non-fiction, poetry and rhymes, with the aim to nurture a genuine love of sharing books of all types.

Reading Scheme & Phonics
We develop a love for reading and provide our children with a wealth of reading material, introducing them to various authors and different types of genres.
Our Phonics sessions take place daily throughout EYFS and KS1. We use “FFT: Success for All Phonics” as our systematic synthetic phonic programme validated by the DFE. Synthetic phonics is a method of teaching where words are broken up into the smallest units of sound (phonemes). Please click here to find out more.

Children in EYFS and KS1 use the aligned Success for All Phonics books as the main reading scheme.

This is supplemented by various other schemes to provide an even richer range of texts.
These additional books are used throughout the whole school including KS2 to allow children to see their own progression and experience a wide range of schemes at the appropriate level.

We celebrate our love of reading in various ways including our annual celebration of a whole school themed World Book Day; our reading bus library; visits to and from the local library; reading challenges and book clubs throughout the year.

Spelling
